In the run up to its participation at NAB 2012, High Resolution Systems is pleased to announce that it is now offering free, live online training for users of its popular UDC (Universal Device Controller) software. The two-way, hosted training gives new customers a basic overview of the software and tutors them on system set up and initial usage. Advanced (Level 2) training, which will explore all the latest features of UDC software, is expected to launch shortly.

The free, interactive online training is offered by open invitation. The scheduled sessions typically last 20-30 minutes and are led by High Resolution’s Drew Taylor. Taylor begins his presentation with basic information and software configurations then opens the floor to questions. “This format allows me to engage with the customers and give them specific feedback about applications,” he says. “Sometimes sessions last close to an hour depending on the size of the class and the number of questions they have.”

He notes that High Resolution Systems also offers a number of pre-recorded video tutorials on its website 24/7. But he emphasizes that live hosted online training not only gives new users a chance to master the basics of UDC software but also provides potential customers with an important opportunity to see the software at work. “No purchase is required to attend one of our free sessions,” says Taylor. “They’re designed for present and future customers – everyone is invited.”

The free, live online training has been so popular that Taylor has conducted almost one session a week for the past few months. Online training can also be customized for groups of customers or for those using UDC software for specific applications.

More advanced (Level 2) training will soon be available to take customers deeper into the product and its full feature set.

At NAB 2012 High Resolution Systems will be on the show floor in the South Lower Hall at booth SL6028, which it will share with P.I. Engineering. High Resolution Systems will be showing new features for UDC software, including variables, logic and scheduling. The company will also introduce two new products: an Apple iPad app, soon to be available from the appstore, and a Windows 8 tablet app, which is available now.

High Resolution Systems invites everyone to join them at NAB 2012 for a hands-on look at UDC software, all its latest upgrades plus new products designed to extend the software’s utility to the world’s most popular handheld platforms.

Honeywell

It was smooth flying for Honeywell Global Aviation Services when 3Stage Design selected High Resolution Systems’ Universal Device Controller (UDC) to manage Honeywell’s innovative video experience at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) 2011 trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Honeywell agency The Brand Experience contracted 3Stage Design, which has offices in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., to create the video system for Honeywell’s featured booth near one of the main doors to the vast convention center. Configured like an airport runway, the booth had five Prysm Digital Mannequins spaced on the simulated tarmac with a large model plane, made of fabric, suspended above. A three- to four-minute attract video was displayed on the 5×2-foot Prysm Mannequins, or towers, and across the aircraft to draw visitors to the booth. Once inside, Honeywell sales associates could then call up an array of product videos on those same towers to tailor presentations to customers’ needs.

High Resolution Systems’ UDC is a software-based control platform for simple, cost-effective control of devices using IP (TCP/UDP) or serial (232/422/485) protocols.

“UDC tied together the towers and the aircraft and controlled all the media players feeding them,” says Todd Hall, who is partnered with Emile Wolsky in 3Stage Design. “We needed a system that would enable us to use the Brightsign media servers we own and that would work with Android tablets used by the sales associates. Greg Byrnes and his team at High Resolution Systems preprogrammed UDC to allow us to utilize our existing equipment.”

Each of the five towers had a holder containing an Android tablet preprogrammed with UDC control software, which acted as the touchscreen interface for some 20 different sales videos for products such as Honeywell’s EGPWS warning system, Smart Runway and Smart Landing systems, and HTF 7000 engines.

“The sales associate could walk to a tower and use the tablet to call up the video on the product the customer was interested in,” says Hall. “Another tablet permitted us to run the attract video and override anything on the towers.”

A six-foot umbilical tied the tablets to the UDC server, which talked to the Brightsign media players. “We’ve learned by experience that wireless is not a good solution for the trade show floor,” Hall notes. “When everybody’s systems are fired up, everything crashes.”

The ability of UDC to offer a customized GUI was also important, he says. “We designed the GUI and provided a lot of suggestions and input in terms of the layout and the buttons. Greg took our Photoshop files and refined them. His attention to detail regarding how the app would run was invaluable to us – things like having time outs on the tablets and password protection on different levels of the tablets.”

Hall reports that the client was “very happy” with the booth’s video components. For Hall’s part, having seen what High Resolution Systems’ UDC can do, he is already working on a new project with Greg Byrnes utilizing UDC control.

The latest to discover the utility and versatility of High Resolution Systems LLC’s Universal Device Controller (UDC) is SPEED, a member of the FOX Sports Media Group, which is deploying a UDC-400 in its Charlotte, North Carolina studio. The software-based UDC-400 is the product of choice for the live event, staging and rental, worship, corporate industrial and broadcast markets.
“We have a Vista Spyder and were looking for a way to integrate control functionality for the Spyder when the Vista people recommended the UDC-400,” says Tom Creter, vice president of engineering for the cable motor sports network. “We use the Spyder on one of the sets of ‘SPEED Center,’ our live weekend news show. Spyder sends video and graphics to three large videowalls, which are captured as part of the show.

“The UDC-400 controls the Spyder, an Abekas Mira four-channel video server that plays graphic elements into the Spyder, and Omnion video ports. It also controls LED lighting that runs concurrent with the videowall,” Creter explains.

He reports that the UDC-400 learning curve was very short for the studio technicians. “Everyone picked up on it really quickly. It’s easy to manipulate and control the templates and profiles they need – they’re able to create a template, effect or move on the videowall almost on the fly. It’s such a versatile little device and allows us to control multiple systems simultaneously – it works really well for TV. We’re thrilled with it!”

Creter also gives kudos to High Resolution Systems’ hands-on service and post-sales follow up. “Drew Taylor and company have been just terrific in detailing and fine-tuning the solution for us,” he says

He will concentrate his efforts on the strategic positioning and business expansion of the interrelated companies HRS Control, Lightware USA and High Resolution Engineering.

Dziekan, who has a 26-year record in the electronics industry, most recently was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Black Diamond Video in Point Richmond, California and Vice President of Sales and Service at Toshiba Display Systems in Simi Valley, California.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mark on board,” says High Resolution founder Mike Taylor. “One of the strategic priorities that I’ve focused on this year is company leadership. While I knew that we were fortunate to have great success with our three start-up companies, it was time to add to our team the skills of an executive who has had leading roles in major electronics companies to build and execute a plan to help us grow in the right way.

“Mark has had success in high-tech new business start-ups, general management, sales and marketing management, product development, field service engineering, customer satisfaction, manufacturing, and supplier management,” he notes. “Plus he offers deep experience in understanding business development of control software, the rental and staging market and the commercial audio visual market – all of which have applications to the challenges of our companies. Mark also has the personality and team-building skills that will help guide our companies in the right direction.”

Dziekan met Taylor as a customer when he was at Black Diamond Video in 2010. “I was impressed by their rapid success and their reputation in the industry for knowing how to not only sell hardware technology but also how to make things work,” he says. “HRS Control, Lightware USA and High Resolution Engineering offer a strong foundation to build upon. Their long tradition of innovation, developing new markets and creating innovative software and hardware solutions is a great advantage that we can leverage for the future.”

Dziekan sees his new post as a chance to use all of his past experience in general management, sales, marketing, product development and service. “I think the opportunity to work with the executive management team – Mike Taylor, Drew Taylor and Greg Byrnes – is what attracted me to the job. I’m looking forward to working closely with them in the expansion of these three great companies. I’m also eager to begin engagement with the entire team. I believe strongly in teamwork and fully expect that our efforts will be a productive collaboration.”

When Dziekan served as Assistant Vice President of New Business Development at Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc. in Wayne, New Jersey from 1991-1998, he was charged with creating and launching vertical commercial video divisions to offset losses experienced in the consumer electronic division of the company. He led the creation of seven different business units the most successful of which was the videowall division whose customers were in the rental and staging markets. In recognition of his efforts Dziekan received the ISP President’s Award for the “most innovative and profitable” business unit within Toshiba America’s holding companies.

Also at Toshiba, he led the first collaborative meeting between Apple and Toshiba, which eventually propelled Toshiba into the DVD hardware and content production development arena.

At NEC Home Electronics (now NEC Display Solutions) in Itasca, Illinois, Dziekan led the product development and marketing of 32 products in less than five years. He was one of the first four employees hired by the company.

Dziekan holds an M.B.A. from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Illinois plus a B.S. degree in Broadcast Electronics Technology and an A.A.S. in Electronic Equipment Service from Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan.

High Resolution Systems LLC‘s Universal Device Controller (UDC) took to the art installation stage recently when it helped Dunkelkammer (Dark Room) control a series of AJA KiPro Mini field recorders in the Spielhalle of Munich’s Kammerspiele Theatre. Earlier this year artist and director Dries Verhoeven devised the idea of a 360-degree projection in the Spielhalle, which would depict the power and powerlessness of the human eye. His concept involved having six blind actors pull a film dolly through the city; mounted on the dolly was a configuration of four Sony HXR-MC50E camcorders, each pointing in the direction of one of the four cardinal points and capturing the world of the sighted person from the point of view of the sightless.

Verhoeven initially planned for live transmissions during the actors’ trek through Munich. But when this proved impossible due to long distances and budget, engineer Nicolas Hemmelmann was tasked with finding a solution that simulated a live environment. He discovered that HD Flash recorders were the safest and most cost-effective technology, and they would permit the dolly to move about under its own power when using a gel cell battery.

“AJA KiPro Minis seemed to fulfill all the requirements for the recorders: HDMI inputs, HD-SDI outputs, network remote control – plus their gang recording feature would guarantee synched tracks with two-three frame accuracy,” says Hemmelmann. “It was easy to control the KiPros with their network interface, but there was no option to use them like a four-output media server. Luckily, German AJA distributor MCI came up with the idea to try UDC control software, and it turned out to be the solution.”

The audience for Dunkelkammer sits in a kaleidoscopic space with the visuals collected by the blind actors projected on the walls around them. “Since Verhoeven wanted the audience to believe that [the show] was done [live] by the actors, all the technical control was put behind the walls of the venue,” Hemmelmann explains. “All four KiPro recorders are now controlled over HTTP commands as soon as the dolly reaches its destination in the city and gets wired for the second part of the show.”

UDC software has performed flawlessly for 30 rehearsals and shows, he reports. “It’s reliable and accurate, and High Resolution Systems offered fast and helpful support,” he says. “We also use the UDC software running on a laptop to access player and projector web interfaces.”

Dunkelkammer ran Munich until the end of November, then moved on for shows in Utrecht, The Netherlands and London.

Both events aired live from LA’s Nokia Theatre.

Mobius Productions of Coral Springs, Florida, which provides screen systems and playback for special events and television, chose the UDC-400 for both events.

The controller’s ArtNet translation feature was key to its deployment at the VMAs, where

Mobius owner Jason Rudolph used this feature of the UDC software as the DMX bridge interface between a grandMA2 light lighting control console, which controlled the servers, and a Vista Spyder X20, which handled switching to multiple screens that formed part of the VMA set. “The UDC-400 acted as a bridge so I had the ability to trigger presets off the Spyder for seamless transitions,” he notes. “We set up the system so if the main Spyder went down, I could quickly re-route everything to a back up Spyder.”

A software-based control platform that allows simple, cost-effective control of devices using IP (TCP/UDP) or serial (232/422/485) protocols, the UDC-400 has quickly become the must-have product for live events such as major awards shows. UDC software can send ArtNet DMX commands from the UDC-400 itself as well as from a touchscreen computer, iPad, iPhone and other smart phones. It also supports Protocol Translation for ArtNet.

Although Rudolph had some previous experience with the UDC-400, the VMAs marked his first major usage of the system. “I had tested it on smaller shows, and it did what I needed it to do,” he recalls. “I felt confident about using it on a larger show, and the level of support from the guys at High Resolution Systems was just great. They did a phenomenal job with any issues that arose as we prepared for the show.”

A few weeks later Rudolph found himself once again using the UDC-400 as the primary controller for a Spyder X20 on the live Emmy Awards telecast where multiple screens also formed the awards-show set.

He gives kudos to the UDC-400 as the go-to device for high-profile applications such as these. “It’s constantly filling in the gaps for the control systems we use,” he says. “It allows better and tighter integration of things – and that’s exactly what we need.”

The main technician for Mobius on the VMAs and the Emmys was Matt Waters. The Spyder operators on the VMAs and Emmys were Larry May and Shiran Stotland, respectively. John Pritchett was the associate director for the screens on the Emmys.

High Resolution Systems LLC has announced UDC 3.2.3, a major new release for the UDC-400, the company’s software-based Universal Device Controller, which has quickly become the product of choice for the live event, staging and rental, worship, corporate industrial and broadcast markets.

The new software upgrade offers additional support for a wide array of devices from monitors and routers to projectors and lighting consoles; improvements to a number of existing features; plus expanded functionality. UDC 3.2.3 is available for download NOW!

Support for new devices leads the extensive list of selling points for UDC 3.2.3. “It marks a pretty big expansion of the roster,” says sales engineer Drew Taylor. “It’s been almost entirely driven by customers who want specific device control and bythe need to support additional types of control protocols, such as infrared remote control (IR) and contact closure.”

Among the new devices supported by the software release are:

*LG LCD monitors

*Avitech multiviewers

*Vista Systems URS

*PowerPoint PCs

*Global Cache IR and contact closure devices

*Kiss-Box contact closure and IP-to-serial devices

*Blackmagic Videohub routers

*Barco MatrixPRO routers

*Barco ImagePRO signal processors

*Barco Encore presentation systems

*BrightSign Digital Signage playback

*PESA matrix IP and serial routers

*Abekas Mira broadcast video servers

*Synchromesh video servers

*ETC lighting consoles under UDP Ethernet or serial control

*Opengear IP-to-power strip controllers

*Canon projectors

In addition, improvements to a group of feature sets provide greater efficiency and functionality for UDC-400 users.

The new software improves the TCP engine to support all types of TCP devices, while improved DMX and ArtNet translation enhances capabilities that users are employing on major live shows and broadcasts.

A greatly improved web server feature includes better sizing and scaling of controller interfaces on iPad, Android and Windows plus improved speed and reliability and additional web server security. New multiple user and access support for the web server will prove popular for a lot of applications, Taylor predicts, as will automatic refresh to push changes to all clients without having to refresh or manually download configuration changes.

New features of the software encompass a variety of applications designed to appeal to many UDC-400 user groups.

Support will now be available for standard broadcast protocols, including Odetics, Amp, BVW-75 and Sony 9-pin for controlling broadcast playback devices. “Customers are using the UDC-400 in broadcast facilities, and we’re pleased to be able to offer them greater control of video playback, screen switching, even changing lights and light presets in the studio,” says Taylor.

The new software release also adds command synchronization for use with synch-rolling playback machines, a feature originally designed for a customer who was synch rolling AJA KiPros for simultaneous play.

New PowerPoint control using the UDC-R application includes live preview of the remote PowerPoint computer on an iPad through the webserver feature. Also originally designed for a customer, High Resolution recognized the implication for boardrooms, corporate installations and events – “any arena where the presenter is displaying a PowerPoint presentation and would like a cool way to control the presentation and get a preview on his iPad or tablet” Taylor says.

Also new is keyboard control, which allows left and right keyboard arrows to cycle through buttons on a controller; added support for IR devices with the Global Cache partnership and devices; and sending and receiving of contact closures through Kiss-Box and Global Cache IP-based contact closure products.

High Resolution is well known for adding features to the UDC-400 and the UDC Software to meet specific requests by customers. Once tested and proven in these applications the company can then offer these new features to the growing pool of UDC-400 users. “The core engine of our software has been tested quite a bit,” notes Taylor. “Now we’re adding to the strong foundation we’ve already built.”

He points out that the UDC-400’s future users stand to benefit from current customers. “The direction we get from our customers allows us to develop a software platform that builds upon itself and gets better and better the more people use it.”

High Resolution Systems is now offering comprehensive training for video professionals who want to master the Vista Spyder video processor, DVI routers and switchers, and device control.

The package combines hands-on training in three related areas to ensure proficiency with some of today’s most in-demand AV technology and systems.

“It’s a powerful educational opportunity that incorporates the knowledge and experience that High Resolution Systems has in all three areas,” said founding partner, Mike Taylor. “Almost every week we’re asked to train Spyder X20 users. We also offer digital video training sessions as the U.S. distributor of Lightware Visual Engineering’s DVI routers and switchers through our Lightware U.S.A. division. And we market our own UDC (Universal Device Controller) control solution. Since those three areas work together it made sense to develop a training package that gives video professionals a deeper understanding of how to integrate the technology as a system to meet their AV needs.”

Drew Taylor, a partner in High Resolution Systems, believes that video professionals benefit from the comprehensive and integrated approach. “Although we already offer specific Spyder and Lightware training, putting it together with our UDC control solution under one umbrella is a much better approach for customers,” he said. “It gives them a well-rounded education on these key devices and video systems, including a history of video processing, switching and control technology.”

High Resolution Systems customizes one- to three-day classes onsite at the customer’s facility bringing the Spyder, Lightware DVI routers and switchers and the UDC for up-close-and-personal sessions with the gear. “We have a PowerPoint presentation that gives a foundation for the training, then we tailor sessions to bring any level of user up to speed on the technology,” said Mike Taylor.

BlueWater Technologies, a national AV company and integrator based in Southfield, Michigan, was the first to take advantage of High Resolution Systems’ training package.

“We needed to upgrade the skills of our staff on these systems and saw an opportunity to do that efficiently with High Resolution’s overall training approach,” said senior project engineer Mike Golding. “Having them onsite with the equipment and integrating sessions in all three areas gave our employees a unique understanding of how the technology works.”
